Visit Vodnjan in Croatia

Vodnjan, a small town in the southwestern part of the Istrian peninsula, is a place of rich history that proudly cherishes its tradition, as well as its cultural and natural heritage.

Numerous small churches, palaces, dry stone walls and kažuns (stone huts built in the fields using the dry stone wall technique) scattered all over the area, are among the main features of this region. Fertile olive groves are the main characteristic of the Vodnjan area. Native olive varieties give unsurpassed quality extra virgin olive oils that places Vodnjan among the world's leading producers of the highest quality olive oil.

Vodnjan and its surrounding towns of Galižana, Peroj and Barbariga will delight you with their rich and beautiful cultural and natural heritage. Try and climb the highest bell tower in Istria, discover the mysterious mummified sacred bodies of saints, walk the longest and the shortest streets in Istria, take a peek into a kažun and many of the small churches in the area. Make sure you try the traditional cuisine and the best products that this region has to offer, such as the extra virgin olive oil, our wonderful wines (don’t miss the local speciality – the vin de rosa), Istrian prosciutto and cheese.

Outdoors and sports enthusiasts can hike and ride over 80km of biking and hiking trails, and rest in the sun or shade on the beautiful beaches of Peroj and Barbariga. There you can choose to enjoy water sports or just sip your drink and relax at one of the many beach bars. For all explorers, be sure not to miss a walk through Galižana and its surroundings, as the area offers numerous archaeological sites, remains of churches, Roman oil mills, ponds and beautiful viewpoints scattered across the landscape.

Thanks to the attractiveness of the area, various events take place throughout the year, some of them with a tradition dating back more than half a century. The biggest and most famous event is the "Days of Young Olive Oil". This event brings together the very best producers of young extra virgin olive oil while presenting the unique local gastronomy. There is also the traditional 'Bumbarska Fešta' with its famous donkey race and the open workshop 'Moj kažun', dedicated to educating about the characteristic dry stone huts unique to Istria. Furthermore, you can enjoy various sports events such as the 'Extravergine MTB Marathon', a kite festival, a snail festival and many more.
