North America: what do you think?

Readers give the lowdown on their favourite places in North & Central America.

Helen Wardley After two weeks driving over 3,000 miles, the West Coast of America was definitely my favourite. Arizona, Nevada and California in two words: beautiful and amazing.

Trekking down the uneven sandy walkway of broken rocks the colour of red Spanish oranges, hiking the Grand Canyon was a jaw-dropping spectacle. You cannot believe something so vast exists in the world. You can hear a pin drop when climbing along the desert path which went on for miles deep into the valley floor. In thirty degree heat, trekking back up the canyon was pretty tough but very rewarding and well worth the pain, sweat and awe-inspired tears.

Watching the sun set behind the great Canyon wall was indescribable as we all sat silently enjoying a moment of calm as the sky turned orange, red and purple.

Jamaica is a lovely country and hot so you could easily get a great tan. The hotels are really delightful and you are treated like royalty out there. The sand on the beach is so soft and white that it is very smooth against your feet. I guarantee you will love it here!

The highlight of it all was the Grand Canyon, Arizona USA. Prior to my visit I was always sceptical when someone says that something literally ‘took their breath away’; but this place really does. Perched on the Emilyedge of a rock face. I looked out in admiration at the huge basin that engulfed me. It was, as the Yanks say, awesome.

My favourite place was Isla Mujeres, a tiny island off the east coast of Mexico. It was just like paradise – white sand, palm trees, turquoise seas and parties on the beach every night. I’d go back there in a second if I could afford it.
