‘Explore’ your gap year options at The Big Outdoor Show

Whether you’re planning a big adventure or just a small one, it pays to be prepared, and what better way to learn about exploring the world than from those who’ve taken expeditions to the extreme?

Over Spring Bank Holiday weekend, some of the most adventurous of adventurers will journey to the wilds of Willen Lake in Milton Keynes to impart their survival skills and knowledge of travel in a special seminar at The Big Outdoor Show. Headlining the speaker platform is the legendary Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the world’s greatest living explorer and the only man to have travelled around the earth’s circumpolar surface.

Joining him in the speaker line-up is Felicity Aston, the first woman to ski the Antarctic, and Mark Wood, an accomplished polar explorer who, in February 2016, plans to trek from the Canadian coastline to the North Pole with no re-supply.

But you don’t need to cross snowy plains to be adventurous as another speaker Alex Jackson will tell you. He organises either scenic or safari motorcycle tours in South Africa where you can spend nights in the bush surrounded by wildlife.

Another show speaker and master in survival skills John Sullivan can talk you through the essentials like how to navigate without a compass…or your smartphone! The last speaker on the platform is Richard Harpham, a stand-up paddleboarder and kayaker extraordinaire who, despite having explored places like the Sahara and Ukon River, claims that small adventures on the river Ouse can be just as exciting as big ones overseas.
