Get outdoors during your gap year in Cancun!
Cancun is a place known for its revelers during summer, but there is much more to the southern Mexican city than just partying. In fact the city and its surrounding areas are beautiful with much to see and do. Here are just a handful of ideas if you’re planning on visiting during your gap year, and two of which involve turtles.

You will be able to help newly hatched loggerhead and leatherback turtles make their way to the shore before a bothersome seagull gets its beak around them. Just a short while away from the city is the Riviera Maya, which is not just an area of breathtaking beauty. Close by, one can find find Mayan sites such as Cobá and Muyil. These settlements, which experts believe to have been made around 100 AD. Of these structures that still remain in brilliant condition considering their age, there is La Iglesia, a pyramid that was built to honour the Gods.

If you’re still in the Riviera Maya, there are tours that leave from the bay which will take you to Akumal, a top spot to get up close and personal with the ‘tortoises of the sea’. In the area, you will be able to come across over eight different species of the beautiful creatures. When you’ve had a long day exploring ancient ruins or saving reptiles, it’s always a nice to unwind. Play Delfines is a beach like no other. The waters are clean and clear, with beautiful white sand.
