Top 10 Popular Things To Do in Split, Croatia
The buzzing city of Split is a perfect destination to explore, with plenty of bars, restaurants & shopping hotspots to keep you busy.
Here's a list of ten things that are popular to do whilst visiting the beautiful city of Split.
1. Stroll around Old Split
Wander through Split’s ancient streets and discover its history. At the heart of the old town you’ll find Diocletian’s Palace — one of the best preserved Roman remains in the world. It is here that you can find several Game of Thrones filming locations including Daenerys’ throne room and the streets of Meereen.
2. Climb the bell tower
An emblem of Split, the Cathedral of St Domnius offers those brave enough to climb its bell tower a spectacular view of the town.
3. Walk up Marjan Hill
A hidden gem found just outside the city, this hill is a popular recreational spot offering a number of things for visitors. It is covered in pine forest and has its own beaches, jogging trails, tennis courts, zoo and amazing views of Split and its nearby islands.
4. Explore Krka National Park
Thanks to an excellent public transport system, a day trip from Split to Krka National Park is easier than you might expect. The beautiful surroundings host hundreds of species of wildlife and a number of waterfalls. Make sure you bring your swimwear and a towel to be able to swim in the cool waters.
5. Go island-hopping
From Split, you can take ferries to a number of different surrounding islands: Šolta, Hvar, Brač, Vis and Korčula. In Brač, head to Bol to marvel at Zlatni Rat beach with its strange pointed shape. Lie on Korčula’s sandy beaches — a rarity in Croatia’s largely rocky terrain.
6. Visit the local market
Split’s market is open every day and is located right next to the bus terminal. You can pick up all sorts of things there — souvenirs to take home or fresh fruit and vegetables. For unique jewellery and crafts, have a look at the market in the basement halls of Diocletian’s Palace.
7. Try out a game of ‘picigin’ on Bačvice beach
Bačvice is Split’s most popular beach with its sandy shores, bars, clubs, showers and changing rooms. In summer, you’re sure to see locals playing a game called picigin, splashing about in the sea and trying to keep a small ball in the air with their hands and feet — have a go!
8. Be amazed at Froggyland!
There are a couple of different pub crawls for you to choose from but the general theme will be lots of drinks from open bars, meeting new people and having a great time in the process! It’s a great way to experience the nightlife that Split has to offer. You might even get a free breakfast thrown in to help nurse the hangover the next day!
10. Have the time of your life at Ultra Festival
If you’re a fan of dance music and are thinking about visiting Split during July 2017 then you should definitely consider buying a ticket to Ultra Festival. The main event takes place inside Stadion Poljud but the festival also hosts boat and beach parties on nearby islands.
