The capital and largest city of Greece, Athens is also one of the world’s oldest cities. Boasting historical sites, including three locations of the modern Olympic Games, wonderful food and a warm climate, Athens offers appeal for visitors year round. For lovers of culture, Athens is a hub for the arts, learning and philosophy. This city is also home to Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum.

Planning travel abroad can be expensive even for the most saving-savvy of travellers, but there is no need to break the bank. With budget-conscious travellers in mind, TripAdvisor has put together its list of top value places to stay in Athens, according to TripAdvisor reviews*:


1. Pagration Youth Hostel

Open for 35 years, Pagration Youth Hostel offers comfortable bedrooms and table games and is within easy reach of supermarkets, cinemas, shopping centres, bars and cafes. As one TripAdvisor traveller commented, “The youth hostel is good value for money and only seconds from a street of bars and restaurants. We would recommend for those travelling on a budget or studying.”

2. Hotel Nafsika

Located close to the National Museum, shops, nightlife and the beach, Hotel Nafsika boasts a café serving coffee, snacks, drinks and desserts. TripAdvisor traveller commented, “Clean hotel with comfy beds and helpful staff. Excellent value for money.”

3. Victory Inn

Featuring 34 double guest rooms styled with a modern design, Victory Inn is located a few metres away from the National Archaeological Museum and Pedion tou Areos, which is the biggest park in the centre of Athens. TripAdvisor traveller commented, “Good location near the centre and with fairly easy access to the Metro. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the hotel is spanking clean. Overall good value for money.”

4. Soho Hotel

Situated within a short walk of the ancient city of Plaka, the flea market Monastiraki, the shopping street of Ermou and restaurants and bars, guests can also enjoy the large and comfortable rooms on offer. TripAdvisor traveller commented, “We wanted somewhere good value to stay overnight before setting off for the islands and you can’t get much better than this. The rooms are clean, tidy and big.”

5. Hotel Aristoteles

A charming hotel with all the modern comforts, Hotel Aristoteles offers 60 guest rooms with free Wi-Fi, a bar, private dining and breakfast to go. TripAdvisor traveller commented, “This is one of the best value for money budget hotels I have stayed in. Both the bedroom and bathroom were spotless. The service was good at reception, and most importantly, the bed was excellent quality. I could not fault the room at all.”

6. Marble House

A family-run hotel, Marble House is situated on a quiet and picturesque street in the heart of Athens. Designed with Greek marble in the lobby and on the stairs, guests can enjoy views from their private balcony or patio. TripAdvisor traveller commented, “Very clean and charming property in a quiet and safe area. Close to the majority of the monuments nearby and overall a value for money hotel.”

7. Hotel Pergamos

Comprised of 33 recently renovated and vibrantly decorated rooms, Hotel Pergamos also offers private bathrooms and balconies, as well as movie channels to kick back and watch. Located right in the city centre, guests can easily reach the Old Town of Athens, supermarkets, restaurants, cafe-bars and theatres. TripAdvisor traveller commented, “The hotel is well situated to visit the attractions of Athens. The reception staff were excellent and the room was clean and comfortable. Overall it was excellent value for money.”

8. Hotel Moka

Renovated in 2010, Hotel Moka features a minimalist design. Boasting private terraces and balconies, guests can also enjoy a drink and relax on the roof garden or pay a visit to the nearby National Archaeological Museum. TripAdvisor traveller commented, “I stayed at Hotel Moka recently and the room was very clean. I was surprised by the excellent roof garden – you can drink your coffee or eat your breakfast and have chilled hours during the night. I think it is one of the best value for money hotels in the centre of Athens.”

9. Apollo Hotel

Featuring 51 guest rooms from singles to suites, Apollo Hotel is a comfortable and centrally located hotel with a restaurant and roof garden, and within easy reach of the Old Town of Athens and Acropolis. TripAdvisor traveller commented, “My husband and I stayed there in May 2013 and had a very good experience. The staff are very nice and helpful, and the rooftop bar and food grill were amazing.”

10. Ilissos Hotel

Located within walking distance of the Acropolis and Syntagma Square, Ilissos Hotel features 86 rooms and five junior suites, with suites offering a balcony and views of the city. TripAdvisor traveller commented, “A variety of breakfast items are offered and the staff are polite. Also, the complimentary wine, water and fruit waiting in the room were a nice touch. All in all, I believe that this choice is a good one if you don’t want to spend too much money but you’re looking for a clean room with a good breakfast.”
