TripAdvisor’s Top 10 budget eateries in Sydney

{hola} Sydney has long been a favourite with travellers and when it comes to cuisine on offer, the Aussie city has no shortage of options. 

While travellers want to see the city and try its varying gastro-delights along the way, budget plays a big part in where it’s possible to sit down and tuck in. With the average backpacker’s limited budget in mind, TripAdvisor has put together a list of low-cost Sydney eateries, whether you’re looking for a full-on feast or just a tasty snack*:

1. The Fine Food Store

A laid-back rustic café offering organic food for breakfast and lunch. The Fine Food Store is located in Sydney city centre. As one TripAdvisor traveller said, “Outstanding food, even better service, and darn good prices.”


2. Harry’s Café de Wheels

Frequented by the stars including Frank Sinatra and more recently, Elton John and Brooke Shields, this eatery is steeped in history and goes back to the late 1930s when Harry Edwards opened up his caravan café. The café is famous for its ‘Pies and Peas’ and in 2004 was classified by the National Trust of Australia.


3. Lindt Café

Perfect for all chocolate lovers, the Lindt Café offers a traditional café menu as well as a wide collection of chocolates, cakes and ice cream created by Lindt’s Master Chocolatiers. As one TripAdvisor traveller commented, “Definitely one of my favorite spots in Sydney.”

4. Menya

A noodle bar offering the authentic Japanese cuisine known as ramen. As one TripAdvisor traveller commented, “Without a single doubt this is the best ramen in Sydney.”

5. Lao City Thai

This restaurant promises to bring the taste of Thailand’s Khao San Road to Sydney. As one TripAdvisor traveller commented, “We have eaten in so many Thai restaurants I could not count them, but this little beauty tops them all.”

6. Brasserie Bread

7. Swiss Bakerz

8. Bacco Wine Bar Pasticceria Qvb

Bacco Wine Bar & Pasticceria offers traditional Italian food and takes its name from Bacchus, the mythological Roman god of food, wine, fertility and celebration. As one TripAdvisor traveller commented, “Best coffee in Sydney and the berry tart - divine!”


9. Mad Mex - Fresh Mexican Grill

Offers authentic Mexican food with locations all over Australia. As one TripAdvisor traveller commented, “Love it, best food I have had in Australia.”

10. Gloria Jeans Plumpton

The Gloria Jeans brand started in 1979 in the US when Gloria Jean opened a speciality gourmet coffee outlet near Chicago. In 1995 the Gloria Jeans brand was brought to Australia where the café offers coffees, cold drinks and treats and sweets. Gloria Jeans is now a widely known coffee shop chain with over 1,000 shops all over the world. As one TripAdvisor traveller commented, “I absolutely love this café – the prices are great.”
